How to record a single browser tab

Recording one tab, and only that tab, is the cleanest way to capture a web app or page. Here is how to do it (with the tab’s audio) and share it as a link.

Updated July 2026

What you need

Just your browser and the Opivv extension. Recording a single tab is the cleanest, most private way to capture a web app or page: unlike recording your whole screen, nothing else can wander into frame, no notifications, no other windows, no second monitor.

Step by step

  1. Add Opivv to your browser. Install the Opivv extension in Chrome or Edge. It lives in your toolbar, with nothing else to download.
  2. Open the tab you want to record. Go to the exact web page or web app you want to capture, in the browser Opivv is installed in.
  3. Start Opivv and choose “This tab”. Click the Opivv icon (or press Alt+Shift+R) and pick This tab as the source. Only that tab is captured.
  4. Turn on tab audio and your mic. Enable tab audio to capture the sound the page plays, and your microphone if you want to narrate.
  5. Record, then stop for a link. Hit Start recording. When you stop, the clip uploads and a shareable link is copied to your clipboard.

Why record the tab, not the whole screen

When you pick “This tab”, Opivv captures only that one browser tab and its audio. Pop-up notifications, your other tabs, your desktop, and anything on a second monitor stay out of the recording entirely. That makes it the safe default for demos, bug reports, and anything you are sending to someone outside your team.

It also keeps the video sharp: the recorder is focused on a single web surface, so text and UI stay crisp instead of being shrunk into a full-desktop capture.

Getting the tab audio right

A tab recording has two separate, optional sound sources. Tab audio is the sound the page itself plays (a video, a call, an app noise). Your microphone is your narration. For a narrated walkthrough of a quiet web app, mic on and tab audio off is the cleanest mix. To capture a video playing in the tab, turn tab audio on.

Tab vs window vs whole screen

Record the tab when everything you need lives in one browser tab. Record a window when your walkthrough moves between tabs of the same app. Record the entire screen for multi-app workflows (an IDE next to a browser, for example). When in doubt, the tab is the privacy-safe choice.

Common questions

How do I record just one browser tab?

Install the Opivv extension, open the tab, click the icon (or press Alt+Shift+R), and choose “This tab” as the source. Only that tab is captured, and you get a share link when you stop.

Does it record the tab’s audio?

Yes, if you turn on tab audio in the setup overlay. That captures whatever sound the page plays. Your microphone is a separate toggle for narration.

Can I switch to another tab while recording?

Tab mode is locked to the tab you started on, which is what keeps the capture clean and private. If you need to move between tabs or apps, record the window or the entire screen instead.

Is it free?

Yes. Opivv is free for clips up to 5 minutes with unlimited share links and no credit card. Pro ($5/month) raises the limit to 2 hours and adds transcripts, private links, and downloads.
