How to record a training video

A clear screen recording teaches better than a wiki page and takes minutes to make. Here is how to record a training video in one take, no editing, and share it as a link.

Updated July 2026

What you need

Your screen, a microphone, and the Opivv extension. You do not need a script, a studio, or editing software. A good training video is just you showing one task clearly, once, so anyone can watch it on their own time and rewatch the tricky parts.

Step by step

  1. Pick one task to teach. Choose a single, specific thing to show (how to file an expense, run the deploy, use one feature). One task per video keeps it watchable and easy to update.
  2. Open what you’ll demonstrate. Have the app, page, or document ready on screen before you start, so the recording gets straight to the point.
  3. Start Opivv with mic and camera. Click the Opivv icon (or press Alt+Shift+R), turn on your microphone, and add the camera bubble so learners see a friendly face.
  4. Record the walkthrough in one take. Talk through the task as you do it, at a natural pace. Press M at each step to add chapters viewers can jump to.
  5. Stop and share the link. Click stop. The video uploads and a share link is copied to your clipboard, ready to drop into your docs, wiki, or a chat.

Keep it to one task

The most-watched training videos do one thing well. If you are tempted to cover a second workflow, that is a second video. Short, single-task clips get watched to the end, are easy to find later, and take five minutes to re-record when the process changes, unlike a 20-minute “everything” recording nobody finishes.

Show, don’t document

A two-minute recording of the actual steps beats a wiki page that quietly goes out of date. People follow a real screen far more easily than a numbered list, and your voice + face make it feel like someone is walking them through it. Add chapters (press M) so a longer video stays skimmable.

Share a link, not a file

Send the share link, not a huge video file. It plays in any browser with no account, lives next to your docs forever, and you can update it in place. On Pro you also get an AI transcript (so the video is searchable) and can see who watched.

Common questions

How do I make a training video?

Install the Opivv extension, turn on your mic and camera, choose your screen or the app you’re teaching, and record yourself doing the task in one take. When you stop, you get a shareable link, no editing required.

Do I need editing software?

No. Record in one take and share the link as-is. If you fluff a line, pause with Alt+Shift+P and resume instead of re-recording. Pro adds a simple trim-and-cut editor if you want to tidy the ends.

How long should a training video be?

Aim for one task and under a few minutes. Short single-topic videos get watched and are easy to keep current. Use chapters (press M) for anything longer so viewers can jump to the part they need.

Is it free?

Yes. Opivv is free for clips up to 5 minutes with unlimited share links. Pro ($5/month) raises the limit to 2 hours and adds AI transcripts, view tracking, and a built-in editor.
