How to record a webinar

Most webinar platforms give attendees no way to save the session. Here is how to record any webinar you join, with the presenter’s audio, and keep a link you can rewatch or share.

Updated July 2026

What you need

Your browser and the Opivv extension. Most webinar platforms do not give attendees a record button, and the ones that do often gate the replay behind the host. Recording your own screen means you keep a copy you can rewatch, take notes from, or share with a teammate who missed it.

Step by step

  1. Add Opivv to your browser. Install the Opivv extension in Chrome or Edge before the webinar starts, so you are ready when it does.
  2. Open the webinar. Join the session in your browser, whether it runs on Zoom, GoToWebinar, ON24, YouTube Live, or a custom player.
  3. Start recording the tab. Click the Opivv icon (or press Alt+Shift+R) and choose the webinar tab. Recording the tab keeps other windows and notifications out of frame.
  4. Turn on tab audio. Enable tab audio so you capture the presenter’s voice and any videos they play. Leave your microphone off unless you are asking a question.
  5. Mark moments, then stop. Press M to drop a chapter marker at each key point. When the webinar ends, hit stop and a shareable link is copied to your clipboard.

Get the audio right

A silent recording of a webinar is useless, and it is the most common mistake. The fix is one toggle: turn on tab audio in the Opivv setup overlay. That captures the presenter and any clips they play, straight from the tab, cleanly. You do not need your microphone on for this, so leave it off to avoid recording your room.

If you plan to ask a question out loud during a live Q&A and want that in the recording too, turn your mic on for that part.

Use chapters so you can skim later

Webinars are long and most of the value is in a few minutes. Press M whenever the speaker moves to a new topic or drops a useful number. Those markers become chapters on the share page, so future-you can jump straight to the part that mattered instead of scrubbing through an hour.

Consent and fair use

Recording a webinar you attended is usually fine for personal reference, but redistributing someone’s paid or gated content is not. Keep it for your own notes and internal team sharing, and check the event’s terms if you are unsure. If it is a live two-way session, the same announce-that-you-are-recording etiquette applies.

Common questions

How do I record a webinar with sound?

Turn on tab audio in the Opivv setup overlay before you start. Recording the webinar tab with tab audio on captures the presenter’s voice and any media they play. You do not need your microphone on.

Can I record a webinar if I am only an attendee?

Yes. You are recording your own screen, so you do not need host or presenter permission. This works even when the platform gives attendees no record button of their own.

How do I record a Zoom webinar specifically?

Join the Zoom webinar in your browser, start Opivv on that tab, and enable tab audio. If you joined through the Zoom desktop app, record the entire screen with system audio instead. See our Zoom guide for more detail.

Is it legal to record a webinar?

Recording for your own reference is generally fine, but redistributing gated or paid content is not, and live sessions may fall under consent rules. Keep recordings for personal or internal use and check the event terms if you are unsure.
